Sand Worm

Unlike regular worms, Sand Worms are gargantuan snake-like beings which dig around several metres below the surface, using vibrations from above to "see" prey. These beasts are only found in the deserts of Athijan, waiting silently beneath the hot sand. They have hundreds of feelers covering their long and scaly bodies, which are used to sense vibrations in the earth. Along with several hundred – if not thousand – teeth, their mouths are also filled with a few tongues, which are actually smaller snakes, and the sand worm uses these to ascend to the surface and locate prey if the vibrations cannot. They are also used for snatching small animals, or even people, by surprise instead of the whole worm lunging up to devour their victim whole. Killing one of these creatures is by no means an easy feat, even for a group of highly experienced individuals. Occasionally the corpse of a long-dead sand worm may be excavated, though usually the worm has rotted completely before anyone finds the remains. Sand and dirt pass right through the sand worm's digestive system, filling the trail it leaves behind, unless it mistakenly swallows any, which is rare.
